This 2001 BMW 740i (chassis WBAGG83481DN86719) has only 5,500 original miles on the odometer!
2001 was the last production year for the E38 chassis 7 series and this particular model has the most desired standard and optional equipment. This car sold for over $66k when new, and we love the M Parallel wheels and facelift headlights and taillights on this one, as well as the short wheelbase of the “i” as opposed to the “iL.” Find it here on AutoTrader in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania for $30k.
The short wheelbase tends to be preferred as it suits the E38’s classic proportions better than the longer variants. The Sport Package includes 18-way adjustable sport seats, shadowline trim (black in place of chrome exterior trim), beefier sway bars, lower and slightly stiffer M-Sport suspension, beautiful staggered, machine polished 18-inch M-Parallel wheels and more. As for standard equipment, this particular black beauty appears to have nearly every OEM option.
Mechanically, the car is claimed to run and drive great and with such low mileage it would surprise us if it didn’t perform like new. Unfortunately, the ad didn’t provide engine bay photos. The Sport Package also includes a 5-speed Steptronic auto transmission, a higher final drive ratio and an adjusted torque converter for slightly quicker acceleration over the standard 740i. The seller claims it was well maintained but didn’t specify if maintenance records are included. With the M62 engine producing around 282 horsepower and 325 pound feet of torque, this 3,700 pound cruiser still packs a fairly solid punch.
The cabin is a light grey leather which is a nice change from the all-too-common black on black affair. Not surprising, the interior appears showroom-new with little to no wear visible. With the full-screen navigation option, M-Sport steering wheel, plush sport seats and more, the inside is as nicely optioned as the exterior. With cruise control, tilt steering wheel, sunroof, heated seats and power mirrors, there are plenty of modern features to help you justify buying this future classic over a CPO 3 year old 5 series. It doesn’t take many miles to ruin an interior with bad habits, so it’s reassuring this time capsule is smoke free.
Always garage kept, one owner, well maintained, accident free and low miles are always desirable factors when searching for a used car but are rarely all-inclusive, especially on the last classically styled 7er.
